State of the project:
To identify by comparative genomics novel pathogenicity determinants that make these two species successful vascular pathogens, genome draft sequences will be provided by Genoscope for 16 strains of Xanthomonas campestris pv campestris (Xcc), 15 strains of X. albilineans (Xalb) and one strain of Xanthomonas sacchari (Xsac), a Xanthomonas species isolated from sugarcane but which does not cause disease in this plant. Comparative genomic characterization will be performed with the LIPM bioinformatic platform. The Xcc sequences will be essentially mined for new Xcc-specific type III effectors, whereas the Xalb sequences will be mined for genes involved in the sugarcane-Xalb interaction. The analysis of the Xcc, Xalb and Xsac sequences should result in the identification of genes needed for full pathogenicity and the discovery of novel strategies developed by pathogenic xanthomonads to circumvent immunity in the plant vascular system.
