Acinetobacter baylyi ADP1 grows on glucose as sole carbon source. However, important genes for glucose assimilation are missing. The only apparent way this organism can utilize glucose is by a periplasmic oxidation, via a membrane-bound glucose dehydrogenase. In contrast to glycolysis, gluconeogenesis is complete and allows the formation of fructose-6-phosphate and glucose-6-phosphate, precursors for cell surface polysaccharide synthesis and for the pentose phosphate pathway.
