Deciphering the genome of Azospirillum lipoferum 4B will provide insights into:

genetic organization of genes involved in the phytobeneficial effect;
genetic determinants necessary for root colonization and adhesion;
major genome rearrangements occurring via phase variation and their biological significance;
importance of plasmids;
role of phages in Azospirillum biology.

All these data should help optimize the use of Azospirillum as an inoculant.
