The living world is divided into three domains : Bacteria, Archeae and Eukariota. The most hyperthermophilic organisms are found in the Archeae.
As its first main sequencing project, Genoscope has chosen the genome of Pyrococcus abyssi, a microbe isolated from samples taken close to a hot spring situated 3500 meters deep in the south-east Pacific, and for which optimal growing conditions are 103 °C and 200 atmospheres pressure.
This project was carried out in collaboration with teams from :
- Daniel Prieur (CNRS, Roscoff)
- Patrick Forterre (Université d’Orsay)
- Jean-Claude Thierry (IGBMC, Strasbourg)
- Joël Quérellou (IFREMER, Brest)
