Lactococcus lactis is one of the most important micro-organisms involved in the dairy industry, being a common leaven used in the making of many dairy products.
A diagnostic sequencing of the L. lactis genome was performed by the Microbial Genetics group of the INRA center at Jouy en Josas, France, with the primary goal being the generation of a low-quality (about 1% error) genomic sequence which would make it possible to investigate its genetic organization and gene composition.
Following a first rough shot-gun sequencing phase of the Lactococcus lactis genome, Genoscope has been asked to increase the number of sequences in order to achieve a high-level coverage of the genome.
