The identification of molecular evolutionary mechanisms in eukaryotes is approached by a comparative genomics study of a homogeneous group of 13 species classified as Hemiascomycetes. Detailed information is provided by the bioinformatic analysis of 50 Mb of genomic sequences. All data are available in the 21 articles published in the FEBS Letters special issue n° 487, issue n°1, december 22, 2000. Major conclusions:
- identification of 20,000 new genes homologs of Saccharomyces cerevisiae;<
- analysis of Ascomycetes specific genes;
- analysis of gene redundancy in the Hemiascomycetes class;
- comparative analysis of chromosomal maps and conservation of synteny versus Saccharomyces cerevisiae;
- detailed analysis of the 13 Hemiascomycetes species.
