Genoscope's
pictureFounded in 1997 in Evry, near Paris, Genoscope - the French National Sequencing Center - is a research facility which serves the scientific community. Its purpose is to acquire (to "sequence") and to analyse genetic information from various organisms of scientific, medical or industrial interest.
In practical terms, sequencing consists of determining the order of the elementary molecules (the nucleotides, designated by the letters A, T, G, C) that makes DNA. Genoscope produces various types of data - entire or partial sequences of genomes or expression products of genes - which are compared and interpreted. Like other sequencing centers in the world, Genoscope performs the DNA sequencing operations on a large scale, following an industrial-like organization that is cost-saving and makes it possible to tackle the complexity of large genomes. The center has achieved the sequencing of the 87 million nucleotides of human chromosome 14, the French contribution to the "Human Genome Project".
